after 30 mins of tinkering the old girl fired up and runs a treat! ha ha! could not believe it!
Wont go into gear but hopefully that a simple fix.
You have got to love VW's and their uncompromising will to suprise you...

Can't believe you managed to find time to work On the beetle after you got home from camping I just had a shower and zonked out for the afternoon.

If it won't go into gear and it's been standing for a while the clutch could be seized onto the flywheel. I've broken them free in past by starting the car in gear but you need to do it somewhere open as the car will shoot off down the road and a sharp stab on the brakes should break the flywheel free. You need enough space to cut the engine and stop if the clutch doesn't free off. And obviously good enough brakes to stop the car.

Right,
We have come to the decision to cut the crap out of George. I will be starting this weekend, and it wont take long.
I dont really want to do this but cant really be bothered to try and sell it as it is pretty damn rotten.
Now we have the Oval there is really no need to keep him.
As I said i dont want to cut him up so if anybody wants him 'whole' then give me a shout before friday. Im not going to put this on Volkszone or anything like that as im not too sure what he is worth.
cheers (sad face) ben.

Right then,
picked this up the other day...
not too sure what to do.
Ade, i heard you like welding? ha ha!

as you can see quite a lot of the rot has been cut out already... not leaving much left along the bottom 6 inches.
not much else to say really.
any ideas??!! ha ha!
cheers

Well I suppose the question is do you weld or do you chop up !!

I guess it could be your long long term project, maybe you could practice your welding on this one!

right,
seen as its winter i thought i would get cracking on the IRS for the van.
I want to do the best job i can so bits have been blasted and some powdercoated.
im now stripping the rear end of the van (now the engine and gearbox are out again).
There is a whole load of oily disgustingness under there so its a lovely job. After a bit of time it started to look pretty good. oily disgustingness is a good metal protector.
Anyway, the drums are with Paul and getting machined down, I have stripped and painted the beetle gearbox ready for installation, the IRS arms are blasted, undercoated, waiting for top coat (i only have red paint laying around!) and the rear wheels are stripped, cleaned, backs painted just waiting for paint today if i can be bothereed to get off the sofa.

right...
thought i better do something with my first beetle i ever bought. I could not watch as it just sat and started to rust in my mum and dads front garden.
So we chucked it in the garage on saturday, chucked a 1600 engine in it, and decided to paint it.
It was never going to be an A1 paint job, it was really only to be done to protect the car more than anything. But both Sam and I are pretty pleased with it though. It looks like the split has had a baby! ahhhhhhhhh...
Its going to be a bit of a ratter, rusty bumpers etc, but a nice solid bug that should go a long way before anything needs doing to it.
Next on the agenda is an MOT.

So here is what it went from -

And this is how it looks now -

cheers

not really updated the little things we have done to Rosie...
so here we go, in picture form.

As you can see she has been quite considerably lowered on drop spindles and adjusters so the ride is still pretty damn comfy.
we hit the floor a lot but a few bumps and bangs are fine.

she desperately needed a clean and polish so we did that and once again she came up lovely. We are always wondering about sanding her back and and clear laquering the result but it sems crazy when she shines up like this...

a few more stickers and hey presto!

cheers

The van passed the MOT today! wahoo!

Beam narrowed by a couple of inches, dropped spindles and adjusters...

I would like to thank paul for all his help on it. The guy is a freakin legend!
And Rob for helping fit it all to the van... you are both life savers! Sam did a bit too... he he (loads actually, she was pretty amazing through it all, putting up with screaming and shouting and throwing things, she can duck a spanner easily).

Here are a couple of photos...

Before -

After -

At the MOT station...

Excellent, you managed to get the right bolts then.

What did you do about the rear wheel bearing?

Cool, was going to say try that.

Rear wheel bearings are a right pain to change, but don't tend to wear out that often.

IRS ones aren't too bad, have you still got my ground down bearings to use as drifts ben?

It is almost impossible to get IRS ones to have no play though, even new bearings seem to have some play

Errrrr I thought I had given them back... I will check tomorrow... To be honest we just tightened the hub but up and that reduced the play and it passed, so, wahoo!
Had to raise it up a bit tonight. Rubbing too much and thought it would be better for the journey to Cornwall!
Going back down when we get back though! Ha!

maybe you did, I can't remember! i will look in the drawer.

Make sure you adjust the tracking when you adjust the height.

Did you put the bump stop rubbers back on the beam, you could do with fitting those to stop it rubbing as if VOSA stop you they take a very dim view (and seeing as they are based around the corner from your work you are more likely than most to see them). Oh and it is dangerous....

Saying that I haven't seen them doing spot checks for a couple of years

Yeh I'm getting the tracking done tomorrow...

Ahhhhh well that's where there might be a problem. I had to cut them off tonight to raise the suspension! It's a long story but I have kept them if we decide to weld them back on!

I drove around for ages on that other beam with none on but that probably means they will pull me over tomorrow! Doh!
