MOT Failure for Loose tie rod end

Post  George&Charlie on Wed Apr 25, 2012 8:35 pm

Hi guys, quick question, the beetle failed it's MOT on a loose tie rod end. Will it get through a retest if I just tighten it up? I will obviously replace them in the near future but could do without having to change them before friday.

Cheers

Did they say which bit was loose? Not sure if its the same as the van which I had the joy of doing at the weekend but from what I could see the only lose bits would be the ball joint, nut to keep it tight or the adjuster. The nut can be tighten and adjuster but if its the end you will probably need a new tie rod end, I may be wrong tho as the w/e was my first time doing it! Smile

Cheers Jamie,

I've not had chance to see where the play is yet but I will take a look tonight. I have panic ordered some track rod ends on express delivery anyway but I really can't be arsed to fit them before big bang, lol

The bloke that did the MOT said it would just need tightening up so hopefully it'll just be the nut, fingers crossed anyway Smile

Ah man, why the hell could they just not tighten it up? jeepers.
If it is where the tie rod end goes into the spindle or steering arm and you have a castle nut, it will need tightening and a split pin put in...
Unless the adjustment part is loose, in which case it will just need tightening up - i dont think the tracking will have changed, but it might have done... who knows!
cheers

Yeah I don't know why they couldn't just tighten it while they were there, it's a pain in the arse. Cheers for the advice, hopefully i'll be able to sort it tonight Smile Serves us right for leaving the MOT till the last minute, doh!!

Panic over!! Reading the MOT failure again, it reads "Nearside tie rod end loose (locking nut and bolt)" I had a look and assuming that the nut and bolt is where the tie rod end is threaded into the tie rod, we're all good. It was a bit loose but now it's nice and snug.

Retest booked for 8am Friday morning Smile thanks again guys
