Hi Pete, I've read mixed reviews about the whitewall inserts, I bought a set of steelies with crossplys for the '58 a while back and that had them on, they'd gone a nasty cream colour and I couldn't easily get them back to the white but the tyres were nearly new, I can only assume they're a bit shite in comparison to the real thing , I don't think they'd stay white for long, lol

You're unlikely to find new genuine tinware to be honest mate, your best bet would be to get some second hand stuff and have it shot blasted and powdercoated. Have a look on volkszone for a guy named tinware raider, I bought a full set of secondhand tinware off him for £100 If u are gonna go repro, our friends up north that do vw restorations swear by the stuff made by scat, I'm pretty sure they buy it from limebug. The stuff from heritage and machine 7 is absolute shite and I know that because I've tried it!!

Dunno if that helps but that's my advice Smile

Dude...
forget the whitewall inserts - some people say they are massively dangerous. If they are not fitted perfectly they will eat away the side wall on your tyre and you dont want that going at 70mph in the outside lane...
I would concentrate on getting the van solid and running perfectly before worrying about things like white wall tyres.
I remember the first thing i bought for my beetle was a dice gear stick knob. I wish i had spent the money on something that made it run better. every time i look at it it reminds me of how silly i was. Im going to take it off my beetle before i sell it and hang it from the ceiling in the garage as a constant reminder that it does not matter what your vehicle looks like as long as it fecking works.

With regards to tinware - might be worth waiting until you go to a couple of shows... i have managed to get some super cheap in the past. £100 for a full set is pretty good though if you cant be bothered to hunt every piece down over a couple of shows...

Another thing with the whitewall inserts - you will be lucky to find anybody that will be willing to fit them around here.

cheers

whitewall tyre inserts from coolair good? Empty whitewall inserts

Post  Baydreambeliever Wed Jun 19, 2013 12:59 am

Hi Pete
I would strongly advise not going down this route, we had them on our van when we bought it looked nice but upon close inspection they were starting to wear into the side wall of the tyre.
Result: 4 new whitewall tyres from Karman Konnection £45 each

I have a set of inserts you can have but strongly advise against fitting them

It's pants, get some decent secondhand genuine stuff, repro stuff never fits like it's supposed to Smile

Well-fitting tinware is so important to these motors.

It's not just to separate the hot/cool areas of the engine, or to look nice. It's main job is to seal the hot area from the cool area. By doing this, it promotes the negative pressure in the engine bay which in turn encourages cool air being sucked in.

The cool air isn't simply blown over the barrels to cool the engine. It blows over the oil cooler which in turn (strangely enough!) cools the oil which is doing a tough job in cooling the other parts of the engine which are absorbing heat from the cylinder heads/barrels.

Anything you can do to stop hot air being drawn into the cool part of the engine will help your engine survive.
