Getting your tracking done
Hi everybody!
Where do people go to get their tracking done? Especially you folks with your lowered vehicles?
Or do you do it yourselves?
Cheers!

I've always done mine myself with string a steel rule and some trigonometry.
You basically need to make sure you have to parallel lengths of taught string running down each side of the vehicle at the centre line of the wheels. Then measure the distance from the string to the wheel rim back and front.
From memory my cars needs half degree of toe in which works out about 5mm on a 15" rim so 2.5mm per side so the measurement at the front of the wheel rim needs to be 2.5 greater than the rear per side.
Remember the car must be on the ground when the tracking is checked ideally with a little bit of weight in the front (you'll always have at least 1 person in it when driving :-)), roll it back and forward a few times to settle it if its just come off a jack.
My tyres seem to have done well, although i did notice some slight scrubbing on 1 tyre yesterday when i had the wheels off for a Pre MOT check over but that is over about 10,000 miles.
Most tyres places wont touch old vdubs but i know a few people have had Ben who lives in Deal do there's as he works as an MOT inspector at a tyre place.

Cool, cheers dude!
Looks like i will be getting the old ball of string out then as the outside of Rosies front tyres are wearing out quicker then the insides... booooooo!

One of my tyres is wearing to the outside quicker than the other side but they've been on for about 10,000 miles so i'm not to worried but might give it a check when i have some free time.
Might also be worth checking the camber is set correctly.
It will be easier to make any toe adjustments with the fuel tank out as its a right pain if the cars not on a four post ramp as you'll need to run it round the block everytime you've taken it off the jack to make its settled correctly.
If the car got a narrowed beam you wont get 100% accurate/good tyre wear as the narrowing throws out the Ackermann angle which will cause scrubbing.
Ideally the car should also be on a level surface although i normally have to do mine on my drive which is slopping, its more important the car is level from side to side.
If you need a hand let me know and i'll pop over sometime.

My boss set Rach's Golf up with fishing line and an old set of Dunlop camber guages. It took a while but the car drives straight and true. As Rob says, try and find a 'flat patch' to set it up.
