Engine knocking Empty Engine knocking

Our engines been knocking really badly after it overheated.

I've taken the heads off but couldn't see anything out of the ordinary. I'm assuming I'm going to need to get it completely rebuilt?

Can anyone suggest what I should do next. I'll post some pics of the heads, pistons and valves shortly just in case anyone can see somethung that I've missed.

Oh god... that sounds like what happened to Mike on the Stag dooooooo...
Does it sound like a bag of spanners in a washing machine? or not that bad? i take it there is still the same amount of power? if so it probably isnt too bad.
Im no expert though.
Might be worth a full rebuild, and if you do go down that road and still want to use the beetle im sure we can get one of my engines going and chuck it in the back of yours until your engine is done.

I'd strip it down and check everything and rebuild with new main and big end bearings

When you say it overheated, what happened?

When you say it overheated, what happened?

Paul - We were driving back from Telford when it got really hot, we'd driven about 180miles, one of the hoses connected to the fanshroud must have come off of the exhaust connection at some point, the hot air getting into the engine bay caused the carb return spring to expand and it ended up causing the throttle to stay open and the engine to rev like mad. I tried to disconnect the hotwires (hotwired because of our ignition switch packing up on the journey TOO Telford) from the ignition as quickly as possible but it still revved enough to pop the fanbelt off before I managed to stop it.

Waiting for the engine to cool and refitting the fanbelt and hose, the car drove home fine (about 2 miles from where the problem occurred).

Since then I have replaced the igntion switch, manifold boots and gaskets because of an air leak that became apparent on said journey. I thought that I must have dropped something in the engine whilst replacing the manifold, but that doesn't appear to be the issue.


Any other ideas? How easy is it to strip down the engine, check and replace bearings etc? I'm not to sure I'd want to do it myself on our only engine for the beetle.

If it is making that noise and it overheated and overrevved then it definitely will need a complete strip down and check

Have you popped the valves out of the heads?

theengineshop turn around the machining pretty quickly and when I have had it done I have been happy.

What size is the engine currently?

Cheers for the advice Paul, looks like I'll have some reading to do then and no doubt I'll still need loads of advice Smile

I've wanted to strip an engine down for a while, just so I understand them better. I guess there's no better time than now then.
I've not taken the valves out of the heads yet.

The engine is a 1600tp at the moment.

I have the head tool which makes it easier to remove the valve which you are welcome to come and use
